What is the quadratic formula?
It solves any straight from the three coefficients, including the equations that refuse to factor. On a graph, the two answers are the -values where the parabola crosses the -axis.
It is a center, plus or minus a step
A parabola is symmetric, so its two crossings sit the same distance either side of its axis of symmetry. The first term finds that axis. The root term is the step: go left for one answer, right for the other.
The discriminant decides how many answers
The step is a square root, and the root is the only part that can fail. Positive inside: two crossings. Zero: the step vanishes and the vertex just touches the axis. Negative: no real step, so the parabola never reaches the axis.
