There are the simple reasons to build Aristotle as a tutor. Tutoring has been shown, through decades of learning science and millennia of human civilization, to be the best way to learn. The studies crystallize what’s already intuitive; a lecture in front of thirty students can’t compare to the focused attention of a single tutor. And, for the first time, this type of tutoring has become economically viable at scale.

There are personal reasons as well. Every member of our team has both given and received countless hours of tutoring. We all know, firsthand, the wonderful experience of having a teacher transform words in a textbook into something truly enchanting.

But the real reason one-on-one tutoring is magical is because it’s about you. So much of modern education is about jumping through hoops, satisfying some system’s requirements. A great tutor is different. A great tutor is unconstrained by classrooms or courses. They learn your goals, your passions, your dreams, and they find ways to equip you with the knowledge you need to reach them.

We built Aristotle to be something new: a guide, not a chatbot. A mentor that can bring rigor and structure to a child’s curiosity. A teacher that knows when to reply with a hard question, not an easy answer.

In 350 BCE, Aristotle taught Ancient Greece’s best and brightest in the wide walkways of Athens. His most famous pupil, Alexander the Great, kept the Iliad they annotated together under his pillow as he marched across the known world. Two thousand years later, we are building Aristotle for that same purpose: To find the spark of curiosity in every student, and to help it grow.
