Is an AI tutor worth $199 a month?

The Aristotle team

$199 a month for unlimited sessions across every subject is a fraction of one human tutor in one subject. At three hours a week, a typical US private tutor costs $300–$960 a month.

Scholar is $49 a month for eight sessions if you need less. There is one free week. You can cancel from the dashboard.

Aristotle is a voice-first Socratic tutor built for middle and high school students, and open to anyone who wants to learn.

What does a human tutor cost per month?

Most private tutors charge by the hour. Students who need steady support usually meet a few times a week. At three hours a week, that is about twelve hours a month, for one subject. A typical US private tutor costs roughly $25–$80 an hour, according to a TutorCruncher roundup of national figures. That is about $300–$960 a month.

Subject rates sit inside that band. A 2025 Wiingy analysis of 3,600+ marketplace profiles puts asking rates at $62 an hour for SAT prep, $46 for math, $39 for coding, and $38 for language. Those are posted asking rates, not necessarily the price a family pays after they hire someone.

Bar chart of monthly tutoring cost at about 12 hours in one subject. Typical human tutor $300 to $960, SAT prep $744, math $552, coding $468, language $456, Aristotle Infinite $199, Aristotle Scholar $49.

A second subject usually means a second tutor, a second rate, and another set of sessions to schedule. Infinite is one price for every subject.

If a student used Infinite for those same twelve hours, $199 would come to about $17 an hour. That figure only exists if they use the sessions. Use fewer and the per-session cost is higher; use more and it is lower. The plan is a flat $199.

What do you actually get for $199?

Infinite is unlimited sessions across every subject. Aristotle is available at any hour. There is no commute and no calendar to coordinate.

The tutor is voice-first and Socratic. The student talks through the work. Aristotle listens, draws on a shared whiteboard, and asks the next question instead of handing over the answer. Parents get session summaries.

When is $199 the wrong choice?

Buy Scholar instead if the student needs a few check-ins a month, or help with one topic. Eight sessions at $49 is the plan for light use.

A human tutor is still the right call when you want a person in the room, or a specialist for one exam.

Two hundred dollars a month is a lot of money if the app stays closed. Do not buy Infinite to see whether they might use it. Start the free week, or start on Scholar, and look at what they used.

Does this actually work?

Human tutoring has a strong evidence base. A 2024 meta-analysis in the American Educational Research Journal pooled tutoring experiments and found an overall effect of 0.288 standard deviations. Effects were largest for teacher and paraprofessional tutors, and for programs that met at least three days a week. That paper is about human tutors. It is not a result about AI.

The evidence that AI tutoring produces the same gains is thinner. We built Aristotle to teach the way strong human tutors teach: questions, in voice, on a whiteboard, with session summaries for parents. That is a design claim, not a finding about grades.

The bottom line

Infinite is $199 a month, unlimited, every subject. One human tutor in one subject is $300–$960. Scholar is $49 for eight sessions. Start the free week. Cancel from the dashboard if it is not a fit.
